NAIJA@56: OUR TUNNEL AND THE LIGHT AHEAD

Every 1st of October, as Nigerians, we celebrate our Independence from colonial masters believing that we can assume authority, control and build our nation by ourselves and for our future generations.
I am just wondering why at 56, we are yet to understand ourselves and the strength in our diversity. 56 years seems a like a long time in the tunnel.
A country blessed by Mother Nature in all areas; natural resources and man-power.

It is worthy to note that in the past 56 years, our number one ‘Citizens’ usually read Budget worth trillions of naira, so I am just wondering where all those trillions of naira mentioned in the budget for each 55 years went to…like seriously, where are they? Roads, Rail, Air transportation are in shambles. Education; strikes due to non-payment of salaries among other issues, outdated libraries, syllabus and laboratories. Power seems to be gaining strength lately but still epileptic in some regions. Sports; lack of early preparation and financially supports. I can say only Entertainment; Music, Comedy and On-Air Presentation seems to be the only vibrant sector, because it is Talent induced. Nowadays, you see a young man in his early twenties who couldn’t secure a job after graduation from school, but was able to record two or more singles, then boom, he is all over the radio and TV then the mouth-watering endorsements.

Lately, financial experts told us that Nigeria is in RECESSION and everyone over here, for the first time, is searching the dictionary for the meaning. The common man has been in recession long ago, it’s now that the Elites are feeling the pains of the common man they call it RECESSION…hmmm!
The money, allegedly stolen by one of our past leaders is still the saving grace of the economy since his death. Is he the only one guilty of looting our treasury? Or could it because he is late? Well, that is a question for a future symposium…“poh-poh-poh”.

I don’t really want to bore you with the obvious. I will like you to stand by the recent slogan “Change-Begins-With-Me”, not because ‘they’ created the slogan BUT because we all want to see changes in our daily endeavors. Let’s change the way we live, change the way we teach, change the way we talk, change the way we see one another and change the way we want to build our nation for our unborn generations. That’s just the way it is, to change!
We can easily blame our leaders for everything wrong with the present day Nigeria BUT #WhatIsTheEssence of your education when on sanitation days, we diligently pack and clean our gutters, then leave the heap of dirt by the road side, then rain wash them back into the gutter and the circle continues monthly? Think about it, #WhatIsTheEssence of your education when you throw pet bottles, cans and nylons from your car/bus on our roads and expect the 'un-educated' professional cleaners to remove it? That's not caused by our leaders.
"Standards are not established by your proclamations they are established by your routines." ~ T Jay Taylor.
Let’s take a cue from that.
Finally, the song of GT-DA-Guitar-man came to mind and with the inspiring lyrics I will close this note:
“When am I gonna be what I want to be, When am I gonna see what I want to see, time is ticking and I can’t wait no more, DO DREAMS EVER COME TRUE IN THIS PART OF THE WORLD…igba’wo la o to jaiye oba?!

HAPPY CELEBRATIONS NIGERIA…do believe that as a Nation and her Citizens our collective and personal dreams will come true…WE WILL RISE AGAIN! Cheers.
